Kanrin was primarily a painter but in 1845 he also published a woodblock-printed book entitled Kanrin Gafu (i.e., Picture Album by Kanrin) which included thirty-eight pictures of flowers and (or) birds. The fifteen flower-and-bird pictures are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Kanrin’s style shows the influence of the Chinese painter Nanpin Shen who introduced a new style of painting to Japan, now called Nagasaki style because Nanpin’s studio was in the port city of Nagasaki. In this new style the shapes of objects were created by applying areas of pigment instead of outlining objects with black ink as in previous styles.
